But many need to learn new skills in order to analyze big data. SAGE | CQ Press is working to facilitate this training by bringing together leaders in academia and the tech industry to share experiences and knowledge, as well as form new collaborations. The centerpiece of this initiative was the Social Science Foo Camp (Soc Sci Foo), held at Facebook headquarters and sponsored by SAGE, Facebook, and O'Reilly Media in 2018 (Foo stands for "Friends of O'Reilly"). The event included 250 of the world's leading social scientists, technologists, big data enthusiasts, business people, and policy-makers for two days of discussion around data, technology, and the future of social science. The SAGE video team was on hand to film these experts for the new SAGE Research Methods Video: Data Science, Big Data Analytics, and Digital Methods January 2019. Experts filmed at Soc Sci Foo include: • Justin Ginetti, head of data and analysis at the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva, which aims to inform policy to reduce future displacement and improve the lives of displaced persons worldwide. • Frauke Kreuter, director of the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the Maryland Population Research Center. • Anabel Quan-Haase, a professor of Information & Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario, who focuses on how we understand the effects of technology on society. • Chris Wiggins, chief data scientist at The New York Times and associate professor of applied mathematics at Columbia University, who is a founding member of the Data Science Institute. On top of the Soc Sci Foo video interviews, the collection includes additional expert interviews, case studies, in-practice films, and tutorials on the advanced mathematics and SAGE Research Methods Video: Data Science, Big Data Analytics, and Digital Methods Sign up for a free trial at: freetrials.sagepub.com/rmcat coding used in data science, as well as data visualizations, to encourage researchers to do their own work using big data. The ethics and privacy issues central to these emerging methods are also well covered, as data security and privacy becomes an ever increasing topic in the news. Combined with other resources on the SAGE Research Methods platform, help can be found for every step of the research process. Social Science Foo Camp was organized as part of the SAGE Ocean initiative, which supports social science by equipping social scientists with the skills, tools, and resources they need to work with big data and new technology.
