SAGE's founder, Sara Miller McCune, was guided by her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for academia to
start a publishing company that made quality peer-reviewed scholarship accessible to all. With only $500 in
start-up capital ($250 of which came from selling her air conditioner), Sara bought a one-room office in New
York City at the young age of 24 to start SAGE. She worked as a consultant at three small publishers in New
York, and by night (and in every spare moment she had), worked to build her new venture. In 1965, after nine
months of copyediting and proofreading, Sara published SAGE's first journal, Urban Affairs Quarterly. From
that point on, her dedication to creating lasting relationships with the world's leading scholars has led to the
current day publication of more than 900 journals and more than 800 books a year. A true innovator of her time,
Sara found a need in higher education and filled that need by building one of the world's largest independent
publishers—employing thousands and educating millions along the way.
